Just a Few General Notes

My whole family is visiting Utah for almost the whole month of March. I'm pretty excited about this. It'll be nice to see them and I think we'll have lots of fun. Of course the reason that they are coming isn't very good. My sister decided to grow a big nasty thing in her stomach.

Of course, since I'm a bit of a geek this is the first mental image I had of her. . .growth.

Yes, every time I'm around her I'm half expecting a super cool scene from a sci-fi movie to take place. Unfortunately (?) her growth doesn't seem to be near this exciting, thus she actually has to have it removed manually--via doctors and stuff--which is why my family is coming down.

All joking aside this is actually a pretty serious tumor that she's growing. It's huge, and could possibly threaten her ability to have children. Obviously this whole situation has been pretty hard on her, but she's tough and will deal with it fine. She hasn't actually said very much about this to me because I've been spouting off and getting all whiny lately, for which I now feel very stupid.

Speaking of which, I have a new vendetta against returned missionaries. Well, not so much against them all, but against those who come home feeling like they're entitled to get a little action from the first girl they come across. You can make an educated guess as to why this is getting my goat. And I definitely don't like hearing returned missionaries brag about how quickly they made out with a girl after they returned home. Listening to those kinds of conversations makes me feel kind of like pulling out my red lightsaber and opening up a can of Darth Vader. Making out with a girl two or even three weeks after getting back just seems a little shallow to me. On the other hand, I may have a pretty skewed perspective on this. I'm a writer, a romantic if you want, and I still believe in the idea of true love. And here I am trying to find that one girl, the one who is my BEST friend, so that I can devote myself to her forever. . .but here I am also, 28 and still single. Which just makes me wonder if I've been doing this all wrong. I'm pretty frustrated about all this. Sure, I feel annoyed that I got beat out by some hoser who just got off his mission. But mostly I'm really just frustrated with myself.

The End.

Game Over: Part III

And I should add that the game really isn't over. Maybe I'll retire for a bit to gather myself together again, but there is some good advice in this song by Carrie Underwood.

Whatcha gonna do when the show is over?
Whatcha gonna sing when the song ends, yeah?
How you gonna cope when there is no closure?
Where you gonna reach when the goal gets higher?
How you gonna make it through when you think you lost your chance?

Chorus: Play on when you're losing the game
Play on 'cause you're gonna make mistakes
It's always worth the sacrifice
Even when you think you're wrong
So play on, play on

Even when the floodgates swing wide open
Never let current take you down, no
Even when you're not sure where you're going
Swimming through a mess and you can't get out
Just going through the motions and trying not to drown

Chorus

Even through a storm on the darkest night
Don't you ever give up the fight
Even when you feel you're all alone
Play on, play on

Chorus

Anyway, so the game isn't really over.

Game Over: part II

Here is a section from Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man's Chest that I found particularly interesting today. I've turned it into a a short-short play.

Vexation

Tia Dalma: You know of Davy Jones, yes? A man of the sea. . .until he ran afoul of that which vex all men.
Will: What vexes all men?
Tia Dalma: What indeed?
Gibbs: The sea?
Bald Pirate: Sums?
Wood-eyed Pirate: The dichotomy of good and evil?

Jack: A woman.

The End (and amen).

Of course there is more to the story. According to the movie a woman broke his heart, so Davy Jones cut it out and stuck it in a box.

There comes a point in every human life, or so I imagine, when that doesn't sound like such a bad idea; the idea of being able to separate oneself from the vulnerability of emotion (not so much the cutting out of the heart)...but I'm just being dramatic right now.

I've been spending the last couple weeks wallowing in despair, and I'm sorry that you've encountered it, even in a highly diluted form on my blog. I think I'll be somewhat back to normal in a day or two. Thanks for everybody who's been willing to listen to me blather on about what has been vexing me (same as what vexes all men).

Bl-ah-gging

My sister pointed out, yesterday, that it's been six days since my last blog post. I don't know what she wants from me, but here I am bl-ah-gging, because I can't force myself to do more productive things (like study for that English 451 Literary Criticism test, which I am going to fail, tomorrow).

Yes, I said bl-ah-gging. Maybe I can shorten that to blah-gging

Basically my life over the last couple weeks has been very blah-esqu. Blah, blah, BLAH!!!

I suppose, if anybody even reads my blog (I can't tell because nobody COMMENTS anymore) that you would like more of an explanation. Here it is: Girls are frustrating. They make it so that I can't sleep or eat according to the course of normal, natural human function. Not only that, but they are confusing as well, giving you one message one day, and then the very next day they are sending very different--even opposite--signals. Nothing makes sense anymore.

Blah!!!

Of course I tend to build things up in my mind much more than I should. Every little event seems to have drastic consequences for good or ill. Which is stupid. I'm being stupid and I know it. But I can't help it, and that is super frustrating.

Even worse: Valentines Day weekend = super sucky. And not just because I'm an emotionally constipated mess. This could have been an awesome weekend! There was a large group of my ballroom friends who went to California for a competition this weekend. And it was just one big fat party. I was invited along, multiple times, and I almost went before I remembered that I committed to dance (as a substitute) for a show on Saturday. Naturally, after everybody had left, the guy whom I was filling in for showed up on Friday and asked if he could have his spot back. Therefore, I was suddenly uncommitted from that, but too late for me to do anything about it; too late to change my plans.

Also, I was invited by a girl to Big Band Night, which sounded like an awesome party on Saturday night. It would have been awesome! But once again I thought I was committed to this dance show so I had to turn her down.

Basically I missed out on two super cool events because of this. I still went to the dance performance (as a van driver) and that kept me occupied for Saturday night, but that wasn't near enough to save this three day holiday weekend from being extreme BLAH!!!

I feel like I missed out on some pretty good opportunities. Instead I've been moping around my apartment trying to kill time. I've dabbled at watching the Olymics, pretended to do homework, played at playing guitar, and otherwise been completely unproductive.

Blah!!! I can't focus on anything, and haven't been able too for the last three weeks. Blah, Blah, Blah!!!

The End

Save me From my Torment!

I think all clothing stores should have a little entertainment area with plush leather couches, multiple TV's playing sports, and video game systems galore so that men--who are efficient at shopping--can entertain themselves while the women of their lives try on clothes for hours on end.

Sunnyside Up

Since I live in an expensive new (to me) apartment with a pool, I decided to go try out the swimming. This was a new experience because apparently people don't really spend that much time swimming in these things. They actually lay around off to the side and get sunburned. And, I might discreetly add that there were several HOTTIES scattered about. So I gave tanning a try. It was interesting, but the whole experience presented a whole new puzzle in the social dilemma for this Alaskan male. How does one flirt/socialize/associate with a girl who is dressed in a tasteful one-piece without coming across badly?

Here's how I envision that they do it in California:

Man approaches woman sunbathing, subtly flexes muscles.
Man: "Just look at my chiseled abs and rippling biceps."
Woman (peering over rim of sunglasses, sighs): "I'm not impressed, but did YOU notice my sun-kissed legs that practically GLOW when they catch the light?"
Me, I mean, Man: ". . . , . . . Yes."
Woman: "Well stop drooling on my legs. I'll have to oil them all over again."

Valentines Day Blues

In commemoration of this happy day I've pulled some Oscar Wilde quotes off the net that I feel are somewhat appropriate. . . . Most of them seem to be about women. Sorry ladies, but it's not my fault Oscar Wilde had a lot of funny things to say about you.

~Never trust a woman who tells you her real age; a woman who tells you that would tell you anything.

~Women are meant to be loved, not understood.

~A woman will flirt with anyone in the world, so long as other women are looking on.

~If you really want to know what a woman means, which is dangerous, always look at her but never listen.

~A man can be happy with any woman, so long as he does not love her.

~The happiness of a married man depends on the people he has not married.

~The proper basis for a marriage is mutual misunderstanding.

Oscar Wilde was a genius!

FYI: It turns out that I buy pretty sweet Valentines gifts. Today I bought myself a digital camera! Sweet! Now I don't have to rely on other people and their uncharged cameras.

Blah! More on Dating.

I was in a dance lesson yesterday, working on the rumba, when my coach began harping on me for not expressing any romance as I danced. Naturally the next question he asks is, "when was the last time you had a girlfriend?"

Ummmmm, well, errr. . . never?

That opened the floodgates.

"How old are you?" At BYU? Old.

"What are you waiting for?" A good match, I guess. Chemistry?

"You know any two people (man and woman) can make a marriage work?" Yes, but that doesn't mean they always should, does it? Why rush into making an ETERNAL decision just because any two people can make a marriage work? Why not be patient and find the best match?

Here my dance partner chimed in. "You expect too much(A sentiment sometimes echoed by my sisters)! You should make a list of the three or four most important things that you want in a woman. . . don't limit yourself by unreasonable demands."

What? Unreasonable? Everything I ask is reasonable! So here it is, my list of reasonable things that I seek in a woman.

**Disclaimer: This is sarcastic; me making fun of myself. It is not meant to offend anybody or make girls feel inadequate.

Must Haves:
-Hot Legs.
-A fast car, preferably an Aston Martin, but I guess a Mustang Cobra would do.
-Obviously a religious compatibility that includes a temple marriage and tons of little tykes running around and yarking on the carpet.
-Brain. Not just any brain, a good brain. A brain full of knowledge and reasoning capabilities. Like Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale.
-Athleticism, grace, and poise. Imagine a jaguar reclined on a tree limb in the jungle, with its tail lazily swinging to and fro. Now transfer that same aura to the woman holding my hand :)
-Eyes that I could drown in.
-The soul of an artist. Culture.
-Survivability/Grit. Lost in the arctic? No problem.
-Musical. I like Rachmaninoff.
-Hair from a shampoo commercial.
-Shoot a 5" group from 15 yards with a handgun, blindfolded.
-Be proportionally sized to myself . I don't want to be one of them skinny Southern guys that's always bullied by his wife.
-On the other hand, she shouldn't be afraid of trying to bully me. I like that.
-Cook better than me. Gauntlet thrown.
-Take my breath away every time she walks into the room. . .or even when I imagine her walking into a room. I pretty much should always be in danger of suffocating.
-Bear tall athletic sons and beautiful daughters.
-Squeeze toothpaste from bottom.

Must Nots:
-Be insane. That didn't work out so well for Mr. Rochester.
-Be an ogre or troll. I know in the animal kingdom, the males are the pretty ones, but I don't want to be the pretty face in my family; I'm much better suited for the role of ogre.
-Be fixated, beyond all reason, on power or status (example: Lady Macbeth, numerous biblical women, Hillary Clinton).
-Engage in any questionable activities like drugs, or killing innocent people.
-Zealously cling to parents.
-Shoot me in my sleep.

See, that list isn't so unreasonable.

Here's the short version: She must be my best friend. The End.

A Philosophical Question

This has been burning in my mind lately.

How can a man (me) distinguish between a lady being polite/nice and a lady showing interest or flirting?

Hypothetically, a girl walks by me and says "I like your shirt (pants, hair, muscles, whatever)." Is she flirting? Or is she just liking my shirt (pants, hair, muscles, whatever)?

I can't tell, and I think I misread it all the time.

Tragedy, Guns, and Rape

I stumbled across this article today and was absolutely astounded and horrified.
http://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=6121915&page=1

In essence, an 8 year old boy shot himself with a micro-Uzi, a fully automatic handgun capable of delivering 600 rounds a minute (I got that stat off of wikipedia but it's actually for the regular Uzi. The micro-Uzi probably fires at a higher rate. . .I've seen stats of up to 1700). The kid was at a Firearms Expo with his father, and there was a qualified firearms instructor nearby. I'm not sure exactly what happened, and I doubt anyone will ever be able to definitively say--these things happen so fast--but basically the kid opened up without his father or the instructor close enough to assist him. As a result, the boy was overcome by the continuous muzzle rise and ended up shooting himself in the head. As I understand it, automatic weapons are hard to control, even for adults.

Obviously this was a grievous mistake by both of the adults present that ended in a terrible tragedy. It should not have happened.

Naturally, the anti-gun members of our society are swarming all over this story condemning Americans and their "selfish belief in guns." I was surprised by the vehement anti-gun comments on the article; to find myself labeled as "evil." As if a person who believes in the Constitution, Freedom, and the right to personal protection is somehow misguided by false ideals.

An example of what anti-gun people think about us gun owners: "Gun owners are anything but responsible. They are sick, and they are getting sicker. It's a form of mental illness that's spreading throughout our country and our legislators are responsible for every innocent death. . .Get the guns away from every jackass and luney [sic] tune that shouldn't even be holding a toothpick." (It pleases me that most of the anti-gun comments are neither intelligent or logical).

Here is one of the more disturbing comments that I found, "A woman lying raped and dead on the ground is morally superior to a woman standing with a dead rapist at her feet and a smoking .357 in her hand."

What?! Why is it the woman's moral superiority that is being questioned here?

Personally, I think that the woman standing over the dead rapist with a smoking .357 did a service to humanity. A dead rapist is a safe rapist (I realize this may be somewhat extreme, but this is a subject that merits extremism; I would shoot him myself). A woman has every right to defend herself with lethal force. Period.

Anyway, this has given me a lot to think about. I feel sorrow for the family of the boy that was killed, but I fear the results of this accident will result in more anti-gun legislation.

As an end note: Obama will not support gun rights. His rhetoric is pretty, but he conveniently avoids taking any sort of stance on the second amendment. He says things like "I support the hunters and fishers," and "even if I wanted too, I would not have the votes to ban guns," but it is all just a front. His voting record has been extremely anti-gun (yes, I trust the NRA in this).

Oh, an interesting article on an alternative way to protect against rapists if women don't like the smoking .357 route: http://www.rense.com/general19/rape.htm

On Women

This is supposed to be the other side of my post "What Makes a Man?" I am not qualified to even attempt to describe what makes a woman, so this post will be more along the lines of what a "manly" man--errr, myself--looks for in a woman.

Probably the best example of this comes from the quote that I posted at the end of "What Makes a Man," by Loius L'Amour. I guess I'll quote it again, "A strong man need wish for no more than this: a sword in the hand, a horse between his knees, and the woman he loves at the battle's end." So here we have a man, who finally returns from his war, and there she is, the woman he loves. . . waiting for him.

A man can't fight, like he must, without a woman who loves and trusts him. A woman is the foundation that a man stands on to do his battles. . . that sounds weird, I know, but remember in Rocky III? Apollo Creed is trying to re-train Rocky so he can fight the man who previously humiliated him, but Rocky lacks the fire. Why? Because he didn't have Adrian behind him. But when she gets in his corner. . .

That's the first thing that a man wants in a woman. He wants her to be in his corner, to be his number one fan and best friend, he wants her to back him up, and if she does that, her man will charge hell with a bucket of water, he'll fight till the death--for her, because of her.

Another thing that Louis L'Amour talks about (is he really the source of all this?) is a woman who can "walk beside a man rather than behind him." I interpret this in the sense that a man needs a woman who is a warrior. I use that term loosely to describe a woman who doesn't give up, no matter how tough things get; she possesses an indomitable spirit. Sometimes things just don't work out when a man tries to carve out a living (or a home, his niche in the world, or whatever) with his hands, and if things get tough, a man needs a woman to stand by him; to support him even in his failures. . . and a man will fail, time and again.

Of course, the other side of that, is that the woman needs to be a lady. . . no matter how tough the going gets. Sophisticated, intelligent, and cultured. . . she is the main influence that keeps the children from turning into animals/barbarians (though the man should not shirk his responsibilities here either). Related to this is the special sensitivity to spiritual things that women have. . . this is a special gift that is being lost in this modern era because of the destruction of gender roles.

Perhaps I am being a little too idealistic here, and maybe somewhat old fashioned, but there it is. . . A true woman, a lady, is intelligent and beautiful, sophisticated and unbreakable, and ever so devoted to the man who trusts her with. . . everything.

Here is the ideal picture of the relationship between a man and a woman :)

Yes, I admit my bias here. . . but there is so much that is beautiful in ballroom dance; it encompasses the way the relationship between a man and woman should be. The ideal in every way.

This by the way is Victor Fung and Anna Mikhed. . . I've seen them a couple times in person, and they are exquisite.
And here are Urs and Agnes just as icing on the cake.
I'm not going to try to explain the wonder of Ballroom Dance here. If you aren't familiar with it, I suggest you give it a shot.
Anyway, I don't think I talked about everything that I wanted to mention, but this is good enough for now. Hopefully I didn't come across as chauvinistic or anything. All I'm trying to say, is that a man and woman are equal in their respective spheres. There is nothing wrong with being a true lady. . . or a true man.

What Makes a Man?

Our society kills men and thinks that it is doing the world a service. I'm not talking about actually killing men, I'm talking about taking a MAN and turning him into something much less. . . a man. There is something to be said for the stereotypical western gunfighter--as portrayed in writing by people like Louis L'Amour, or in film by John Wayne. These were men who pitted themselves against nature, who didn't back down from a fight, who worked with muscle and sinew, and never cussed in front of the ladies. Our society, where men try to become women, and women try to become men, doesn't even seem to know what a man is. There is a gradual blurring of the lines of the traditional gender roles that is gravitating our society to one gender, neither man nor woman. Our society wants to domesticate men, it kills their adventurous spirit, it expects them to be passive, subservient, even effeminate. It is taking away the claws and teeth of a bear and putting him in a cage. And there is a world of difference between a bear in this state, and a bear in his natural element.

A MAN is meant to be a little rugged. They are built for this purpose so they can do what they are meant to do, work, and fight. But they also have an intense love for nature. Nature, the frontier, or the unexplored, is something that constantly calls to a man. It is a challenge, but a challenge that offers a hint of a reward. So men pit themselves against nature, they ache to cross the mountains that dominate a horizon, the sea is like a temptress which sings an alluring song, and the pursuit of an adventure is always on a man's mind. They do this because of the reward that is offered, beauty. Men love beauty, even though they are always a little at odds with it. Men aren't beautiful themselves, so they seek to experience beauty in any way possible; they immerse themselves in nature, seek the company of women, and even strive to create beauty with their hands, because when a man finds beauty there is something in his soul that resonates with it, and for the moment, he is at peace.

The ultimate beauty, so I am told, is a wife and kids.

But society distorts this by promising something different, the idea that men should be beautiful themselves. The result is men becoming women, whether figuratively or literally, which is evidenced in today's society.

A MAN is also meant to be a worker. He is ruggedly built with muscle and bone so he can strive against the elements and provide for his family. "By the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread," God said to Adam, and thus has it been through the course of history. A MAN is meant to sweat. But today, men are becoming lazy, while women are working harder. A true man is happiest after a hard day's work, when he can come home and bask in the beauty of his wife and children.

A MAN is also a warrior. There is something inside, a trigger, that once tripped sets his blood boiling and prompts him to violent physical action. A man is meant to have this type of aggression, it is necessary to defend his family and sometimes even his ideals. But this should also be controlled, which men today can't seem to do very well. Thus, the opposite trend of men becoming effeminate, is those who become brutes. These men are animals, not knowing how to properly channel their aggression they lash out violently at women and children. They destroy whatever beauty they find. Why, I do not know. This is a sickness that kills.

A MAN also respects women. He treats them as if they are divine, because they are. When a woman is present, a true man stands straighter, he talks cleaner, he defends her honor, and he treats her with respect in every way possible. There used to be a time when a fight would start if a man cussed in front of a lady, but now men are just as vulgar in front of women as they are away from their presence (women are also quite vulgar these days, but the destruction and masculinization of women is a completely different, but interconnected topic). Today, women are an entertainment for men, an object, which stems from the idea that a man's pursuit of beauty is somehow connected to lust, which is something entirely different. This skewing of a man's duty around women is a result of this de-genderification that is happening in our society. Why should a man treat a woman with such respect if they are essentially the same?

There are two worlds that are completely different, but our society is trying to make them the same. There is a mistaken idea that a woman can enter the world of a man, and a man can enter a world of a woman, but there are aspects of each world that the opposite gender will never understand. A woman will probably never truly understand a man's need to continually cross over to the next horizon, or use lethal violence to defend his ideals, and likewise, every aspect of a woman's world is completely beyond the comprehension of any man.

Christ was the perfect MAN. He was a carpenter who worked by the sweat of His brow, He defended His ideals with both word an action, and He treated the lowest of women with perfect respect. He was a God, who was compassionate, merciful, and loving without ever being effeminate. And He was bold, strong, rugged, and determined without ever being vulgar. These are the attributes that men (and women) should pursue. Christ shows that it is possible to have character traits that are commonly associated with each sex without adopting that persona. He is who men should emulate.

A strong man need wish for no more than this: a sword in hand, a horse between his knees, and the woman he loves at the battle's end. ~Louis L'Amour
